1953 Caribbean
1953 Packard Caribbean
The 1953 Packard Caribbean was modeled directly from the Pan American show car touring the country only two years earlier. But this was the heyday of famous—and very expensive –designer cars. That same year Cadillac introduced the Eldorado, Oldsmobile rolled out their Fiesta, and Buick their Skylark. It was a halcyon year for car design.
In October 1952, Packard decided to offer a limited run of sports cars that, in due course, emerged as the 1953 Packard Caribbean (accent on the third syllable, please). It arrived as a full-size convertible with six-passenger capacity. The car was perhaps Packard’s most easily identified car because of its distinctive body styling—full cutout rear housing, chrome band side trim, and low leaded-in hood scoop. Interiors were richly upholstered in leather and most were generously optioned.
At total of 750 Caribbean’s were built in 1953, and accordingly, these cars are highly sought after by collectors. In fact, the Packard Registry estimates there are only about 88 of these cars remaining. Our Packard Caribbean has its original straight eight engine, wire wheels and patina. She’ll be restored in the near future.
