1964 Corvette Stingray Coupe
1964 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe
With the Stingray on such a roll, it was prudent for Chevrolet to make only evolutionary changes to the 1964 Corvette. The 1964 Corvette Coupe followed the more iconic ’63 Split Window by one year – but sales increased this year, as drivers complained less about vision through the rear window.
Essentially the same as a 1963 Corvette, aside from the back glass, this car featured a 327 cubic-inch motor putting out only 250 horsepower. In 1964 there were several, more powerful, engine options – few ordered the 250 hp motor, so this one is relatively rare. She also features a 4-speed transmission. She rides well and attracts perhaps more attention on the road than any other car in the collection. Folks just relate to it.
If enthusiasts liked the first Stingray, they loved the 1964 – though some writers noted the convertible’s tendency to rattle and shake on rough roads. Sales of the 1964 Stingray reached 22,229 – another new Corvette record, if up only a little from banner-year 1963. Coupe volume dropped to 8,304 units, but convertible sales more than compensated, rising to 13,925.
