1967 Dino
1967 Fiat Dino
The Fiat Dino is a front-engined, rear wheel drive sports car manufactured between 1966 and 1973. It was an intermediate step towards creating Ferrari’s “Dino” and the two are often confused. The Fiat Dino allowed Ferrari to achieve the necessary production numbers to homologate Alfredo Ferrari’s V6 engine for Formula 2 racing. The Fiat Dino Spider was introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1966, and the Coupe version one year later at the Geneva Motor Show.
When Ferrari started its first line of mid-engined cars, they sold them under the brand name Dino. The Dino brand was created to market a lower-priced, affordable sports car; as Ferrari did not want to diminish its brand name with a cheaper car. The first brochure described the Dino as “almost a Ferrari.” The original intention was to brand all of these V6 cars under the Dino marque. However, the new brand was rejected by US Ferrari dealers as difficult to sell, so the cars became designated as a “Fiat” Dino” or a “Ferrari” Dino. These cars were built using the same Fiat engines and assembled by the same Ferrari engineers on the same Ferrari production lines. In this respect, “Fiat” Dino and “Ferrari” Dino were simply examples of early marketing-driven badge engineering. When one discards the marketing, the lineage is plain: “Dino.”
The Burt Collection acquired this beautiful Fiat Dino Spider several years ago in its current restored condition. We were smitten by her sensual lines and Ferrari exhaust note.
