1970 Dino
1970 Ferrari Dino
It’s said that every car collection deserves a Ferrari Dino, but not too many years ago, you could barely give them away. And there was a reason for that – which you’ll need to answer in the quiz section. There is so much history in the Ferrari Dino that I hesitate to tell you too much in the description - however I will comment on the color, it’s original – and was called Rosso Dino. It’s one of very few Dinos that were painted this color.
The Dino was built by Enzo Ferrari as a tribute to his son, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, who passed away in 1956 at the age of 24. Alfredo had been credited with the design of the V6 engine. He had been trained in Switzerland as an engineer, after which he returned to the family business and received tutoring from his father. It was Enzo’s dream to one-day hand over the keys to the company to his son.
The Dino was produced by Ferrari from 1968 to 1976, and it was the first Ferrari model manufactured in high numbers. The Dino brand was created to market a lower-priced, affordable sports car, as Ferrari did not want to diminish its brand name with a cheaper car. The first brochure described the Dino as “almost a Ferrari.” However, none of the Dino cars received the Ferrari marque – it was void of the signature Ferrari logo, thus never making it officially a Ferrari.
The Dino was the first road-going Ferrari to adopt the V6 engine; this was a less expensive and less powerful option than the other Ferrari’s at that time. In this vein, the Dino was built to compete and race against the Porsche 911 and similar cars. But in order to meet the Formula Two racing regulations, over 500 production units had to be made. Ferrari was not capable of producing such numbers, so they relied on other resources—the six-cylinder engine was supplied by Fiat. This is the first time a mass-produced engine was used in a Ferrari car.
