1983 Ferrari 512 BBi
Technically, this is the first collector car and the first Ferrari in The Burt Collection. So, it holds a special place in our hearts and in our collection.
In1983 she was considered the fastest production automobile in the world, topping out at 175 mph. Today, virtually any new Corvette can achieve this speed. Enzo Ferrari wasn’t blind to the success of the Dino, or to the market’s yearning for a mid-engine 12-cylinder Ferrari. When finally he decided to make one, however, he surprised most everyone by using a “Flat-12” engine rather than a V-12. The engine design was dubbed a “Boxer” because the pistons were opposed parallel to one another and moved like a boxer throwing jabs.
Ferrari had used the Flat-12 configuration for years. It appeared first in its Formula 1 cars in 1964 and 1965, then in 1969’s undefeated hill-climb champion, the Ferrari 212 E Montagna. Ferrari’s 1970 and 1971 F1 machines also were Flat-12 powered. “I very much liked the Boxer engine because of its space architecture,” Sergio Pininfarina said. “For years I had to fight with a high engine and a large radiator because the engine’s height automatically (dictated) the radiator’sheight… The boxer engine was lower, making everything easier.”
This was the world’s first road going Flat-12 engine. But the fact that it displaced the same 4.4-liters as the Daytona’s V-12 allowed Ferrari to use components already in production, including pistons and connecting rods. This Ferrari engine was also the first in any high-performance sports car with camshafts driven by belts rather than by chains.
